Montana wildlife regulators have given initial approval to wolf-trapping rules meant to reduce the chances of other animals being caught.
    
The proposal will go for a 30-day public comment period before the Fish, Wildlife and Parks Commission takes a final vote.
    
Wildlife Bureau Chief Ken McDonald told the commission Thursday trappers are being instructed to put the tension that sets off the traps at 8 to 10 pounds.
    
Opponents say that is not enough to prevent trapping other species. Kim Bean of Helena says the proposed setting could be tripped by her dog. She says protected lynx also could set off the traps.
    
Montana is looking to Idaho as a model by adding trapping to its wolf hunt for the first time this year.
