Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks commissioners reviewed new hunting quota proposals for mountain lions at a meeting Thursday in Helena.

The proposed numbers are slightly less than last year, but still reflect FWP’s plans to reduce the population of Montana’s big cats by 30% percent.

Initial results from an ongoing study in the Bitterroot show that mountain lions play a large part in elk calf deaths, according to FWP officials.

'It's a combination of other factors as well,” said FWP spokesperson Vivaca Crowser. “But lions have had more of an impact than we thought going into it. What we've always committed to with that study is, even as the study is ongoing, trying to implement some management that makes sense."
