The city of Helena has again received permission to trap and kill up to 200 deer that live in the city limits.
The Fish, Wildlife and Parks commission on Thursday approved the request to reduce the number of urban deer in Helena.
Since 2008, 530 deer have been removed from Helena after being lured into traps and killed with bolt guns. The deer carcasses are taken to a butcher who processes the meat, which is donated to Helena Food Share. The agency is still determining if it can pay for the processing this year.
The plan approved by FWP commissioners calls for removing up to 200 deer between Jan. 1 and March 31. If the quota isn't met, removal efforts can continue on Nov. 15.
