A man known for kidnapping an athlete in the 1980s is facing sentencing for his role in a medical marijuana operation raided in a 2011 federal crackdown.
Dan Nichols pleaded guilty to maintaining a drug-involved premises as the security guard for Montana Cannabis. He and his father were previously dubbed "The Mountain Men" for kidnapping biathlete Keri Swenson in 1984.
His father, Don Nichols, killed a man who tried to rescue her, while Dan Nichols accidently shot Swanson and left her to die.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Joseph Thaggard says Nichols has a violent history, is a recidivist and should receive a prison sentence of 71 months.
Nichols' attorney argues he played no decision-making role in the operation and should get just three years.
Nichols' sentencing is Thursday in Missoula.
