HAMILTON, Mont. -

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is donating $38,000 to help with an elk survival study in the southern portion of the Bitterroot Valley.

The Ravalli Republic reports the Missoula-based nonprofit conservation organization announced the donation Friday.

The elk survival study now in its third and final year is a partnership between Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and the University of Montana.

Researchers hope to determine why there is a low elk calf survival rate in the region and what is killing them.
