Two men are in custody after an attempted robbery and shooting in East Missoula early Friday morning.
Arrested were 23-year-old Christopher Lee Birch and 24-year-old Preston James Hanna.
A 21-year-old night clerk has undergone multiple surgeries at a Missoula hospital after being shot in the back.
Investigators said the shooter entered Ole's Country Store about 3 a.m. Friday, and said "Gimme all the money,."
The clerk was cleaning up the beverage bar about 20 feet away.
He didn't give the man the money.
Video surveillance shows the man entering the store, leveling a rifle, and shooting.
The bullet hit the young clerk as he was bending down.
"It appears he was shot in the upper shoulder," said Missoula Sheriff's Department public information officer Jason Johnson, " in the back."
Investigators said the shooter ran out of the store without taking anything.
"I know a 911 call was placed, "said Johnson, " There was an open line for a little while and they were able to talk to the victim. 911 spoke to the victim as deputies responded."
At mid morning, deputies arrested Christopher Lee Birch on Cooley Street in Missoula.
In the afternoon, they arrested Preston James Hanna on Montana Avenue in East Missoula.
Neighbors were asked to evacuate prior to Hanna's arrest.
Authorities said they believe Birch entered the store, while Hanna drove the getaway car.
In East Missoula, law officers detained a witness who may have had first hand information on the crime.
Ole's remained closed to customers as investigators collected evidence.
Investigators took out 10 bags of evidence.
They also loaded up a sunglasses rack with a bullet hole.
Sami Broadwater used to work at Ole's.
She knows the young man who was shot.
"He was just a teddy bear, just nicer than can be,"said Broadwater.
At the Reno Cafe in East Missoula, the lunch crowd wanted to know everything that happened.
Short order cook Kenneth "Coop" Cooper kept busy with lunch orders.
The night clerk at Ole's, laying in the hospital, shot in the back, is his good friend.
