BOZEMAN, Mont. -

Students, faculty and staff at Montana State University got to sample some unusual fare Friday.
MSU professor Florence Dunkel has been putting on the annual Bug Buffet for 25 years. The event features dishes made made with crickets, moths, and meal-worms.
Dunkel told us what she likes best: "If I can get grasshoppers, I much prefer them. They fry in a red color just like shrimp."

The bugs were prepared in a variety of ways. Many were sauteed with various spices or mixed in a stir-fry.

Kids who attended the event said they enjoyed the bug filled brownies. Many people who tired the food tell us they were delightfully surprised.

Miles Essert, a freshman, told us this a new experience for him. "It's something I've never done before, but I like it," he said.

Dunkel says the best time to find fresh insects is in the spring when new bugs have hatched. She said insects are not only important as a food source, but can also be used to make cloth.

"This room is decorated with insect saliva from the silk moth larva," Dunkel said.
