MISSOULA, Mont. -

If you're itching to get your hands in the dirt, Garden City Harvest in Missoula is taking applications for community garden plots. Demand exceeds supply, so there will be a lottery.

The deadline for applications is midnight Wednesday.

The plots measure 15 feet by 15 feet.

There are 7 community gardens. Last year there were about 100 people on the waiting list. Those will be considered first in the lottery.

The cost for a garden spot is $40. Included in the deal are tools like pitchforks and wheelbarrows, compost and irrigation water.

The gardens are organic.

"We've shown you can get over 300 pounds of produce from your garden plot in a season," said Garden City's Genevieve Jessop Marsh. "That's enough you might be able to put a little away for winter.

You can apply for a spot at online at Garden City Harvest's website.
