MISSOULA, Mont. -

The Chrandal Creek Fire is burning southwest of Darby along the Montana-Idaho state line.

Residents in the Upper Hughes Creek area on the Montana side are under notification of possible evacuation.

The historic Alta Ranger Station is wrapped for protection.

The Chrandal Creek Fire is burning across 1,700 acres. Fire bosses tell NBC Montana that pine bark beetles have made the growth so brittle, the fire has been growing in all directions. They say the beetle infestation and the rugged terrain are making the fire too dangerous for ground crews to get close.   None of this fire is contained.
