Schools throughout Butte served up something a bit different for lunch, meals completely made up ingredients grown locally in Big Sky Country.
1,600 students in Silver Bow County sat down to what looked like an ordinary lunch.
"It tastes better and smells better," said Paige Burrow, a fifth grade student at Hillcrest Elementary School.
But these meals were much different.
"I know it's really fresh and it gets shipped right here," added Logan Roepe, who is also a fifth grade student.
The National Center for Appropriate Technology partnered with the Montana Food Producers and the Butte Public Schools to source the food, and create the meals.
"It’s nice to have Montana-made beef, carrot, and apples today because it's nice to provide kids with things that come from Montana, and is fresh from Montana," added Susan Johnson, Principal of Hillcrest Elementary School.
Crissie McMullan, who is an Agricultural Specialist, completely supports the idea.
"It’s really a win-win because farmers get new markets for their food, and the kids, the important consumers that our are future, they get healthy nutritious food for school meals," McMullan stated.
Coordinators with the program told NBC Montana they would like to get more food from Montana farms into schools for the future.
