BUTTE, Mont. -

A Butte historic preservation official is requesting the city's "ghost signs" be protected.

Ghost signs are the old advertisements painted on the sides of buildings from businesses that were around long ago.

NBC Montana is told some of the signs even date back to more than 100 years old.

But many residents are concerned that as the signs begin to fade they might become lost forever.

Questions are being raised by city officials as to whether these ghost signs should be preserved "as-is" or repainted.

We wanted to know more so we asked local historian Bob McMurray.

"We have different businesses that have been out of business for over 100 years and their signs are still legible, not by much but they’re still legible, and it's just to show you the uniqueness of Butte, I think they need to be preserved but it's a touchy situation on how they go about preserving them," said McMurray.
