MISSOULA, Mont. -

People are returning to ten homes northeast of Corvallis after an out-of-control burn forced them to get out.

This was in the Corvallis Hills Estates subdivision near Bald Butte.

Ravalli County Sheriff Chris Hoffman told us this evening that a resident was burning slash when gusty winds whipped the fire out of control at about 4:20 this afternoon.  The fire quickly spread.  Fire crews from several cities hurried to put out the fire, but it destroyed a couple of vehicles and at least one outbuilding.

Firefighters asked sheriff's deputies to evacuate nearby homes.  The deputies gave notice to 10 homes.

Crews had the fire under control at about 6:30 pm and residents were able to return to their homes.

Fire crews have been busy with a number of out-of-control burns in the last couple of days.

Hoffman warns that even though it is open burning season, people are still required to be extremely cautious about conditions before they burn.

The sheriff adds that his department can charge individuals who do not call authorities prior to burning, have the correct equipment nearby, or are careless about dangerous burning conditions.
