A jury has found a Billings man guilty of shooting and killing his former best friend in 2010 outside a convenience store.
Prosecutors say 23-year-old Cleveland Boyer "executed" the unarmed 21-year-old Daniel Valenzuela to avenge an assault against Boyer's ex-girlfriend.
Boyer says he shot Valenzuela with a .22-caliber pistol in self-defense on March 13, 2010, outside a downtown Billings convenience store. He testified he though Valenzuela was reaching for a gun.
The Billings Gazette reports ( ) the jury convicted Boyer of deliberate homicide and felony tampering Thursday after deliberating for about two hours.
Prosecutors used text messages from Boyer's phone to show he planned to go after the victim after learning Valenzuela had beaten his former girlfriend the night before.
A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.
