The Montana Senate has rejected a measure that would have allowed legislators to carry concealed firearms in the state Capitol.
Senate Bill 210 called for allowing any lawmaker with a permit to carry a concealed weapon on the Capitol grounds.
Republican Sen. Verdell Jackson of Kalispell carried a similar bill two years ago that also failed.
Jackson says the Capitol's two armed security guards are not adequate protection and that metal detectors are too expensive and ineffective.
Senators opposing the bill cited safety concerns over legislators packing heat.
The measure failed Monday in a 29-21 vote.
