MISSOULA, Mont. -

An Arizona man has pleaded guilty to a nearly decade-old rape in Missoula.

The Missoulian reports 46-year-old Kenneth Edward Whatley has pleaded guilty to sexual intercourse without consent. Sentencing is set for June 18. His trial had been scheduled to start on Thursday.

Prosecutors charged Whatley with breaking into a home between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. on Dec. 5, 2003, and raping the woman who lived there.

In December 2010, the state crime lab linked DNA on a baseball cap left in the house to Whatley, a convicted offender in Arizona.

An affidavit was filed in Justice Court in Missoula County in December 2011. Whatley was arrested in Arizona and returned to Montana in January 2012. It was not immediately clear how the case progressed from 2010 until Whatley's arrest.
