HELENA, Mont. -

An appellate court has ruled a lawsuit seeking satellite voting offices on three Montana reservations can go on.

The 9th U.S. District Court of Appeals on Wednesday denied a request by defendants led by Montana Secretary of State Linda McCulloch to dismiss the appeal for lack of jurisdiction.

The plaintiffs from the Crow, Northern Cheyenne and Fort Belknap reservations are appealing an earlier ruling. District Judge Richard Cebull denied their request to force state and county officials to set up the satellite offices for early voting and late registration.

The plaintiffs say they are forced to drive long distances to county courthouses. They say that leaves them disadvantaged compared to white voters.

The appellate court has asked the parties to file their arguments starting next month.
