The director of Glacier Park International Airport in Kalispell says the airport will continue to operate even if its airport control tower is closed by the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Cindi Martin tells the Missoulian (http://bit.ly/VYRCCh) the airport operated without a control tower for 60 years up to 2001 and will continue to operate if the current control tower is shuttered.
Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood says the agency is looking "to likely close" air traffic control towers at airports that have fewer than 150,000 flight operations per year.
Helena Regional Airport is also on the list.
The potential closures are the result of automatic federal spending cuts due to begin March 1 when the government is forced to trim $85 billion in domestic and defense spending.
