BOZEMAN, Mont. -- A Belgrade woman accused of embezzling nearly $100,000 from a little league team appeared in court Tuesday.
Amy Jo Erickson pleaded not guilty to the felony embezzlement charge.
Erickson served as the treasurer of the Belgrade Little League Baseball Organization. Police believe she wrote checks from the league's account to her husband's plumbing business and herself, as well as pocketed cash funds.
According to police reports, the stolen money totaled $92, 085.48 between January 2007 and February 2010.
The little league's president Darren Fowler became suspicious in late 2010 after an outstanding debt to Universal Athletics had not been paid, despite Erickson saying she made the payments.
He contacted police, then discovered several checks made out to Erickson's Plumbing, the police reports said.
During an interview with a detective, Erickson did admit to unlawfully taking funds from the baseball organization's account.
League procedure states that each check has to have a two-party signature in order to be deposited.
In the police report, Erickson said she would have the league's president and a board member signoff on blank checks, then make them out to Erickson Plumbing or herself.
During the detective interview, Erickson said her husband had no idea of the embezzlement.
If convicted, Erickson could receive 10 years in prison and fined up to $50,000.
