USDA Unveils New Gardening Zone Map

FLATHEAD COUNTY

POSTED: 11:32 pm MST January 26, 2012
A new map will give garners in Montana a chance to turn over a new leaf for the first time in decades. Experts at Plant Land, a nursery in Kalispell, explained how the Department of Agriculture changed its map.

In Northwest Montana, the department figured the area around Flathead Lake wouldn’t drop much lower than 15 degrees below zero. That’s five degrees warmer than the old charts.

If plants survive however, one grower thinks it’ll be because of improved genetics.

“The few varieties that possibly weren’t able to grow in the Flathead Lake area before that are now able to such as weigelas, are mainly due to new discoveries in genetics,” said Plant Land employee Adam Grigsby.
