MANHATTAN, Mont. -- A wildfire raged over 100 acres north of Manhattan on Saturday, and it took officials several hours to put the blaze out.
The next day, the land is barren and some areas still smoking.
Area residents eyed the fire damage. Local Nancy Pierce estimates nearly half of her property was consumed in the blaze.
"Devastation, just absolute devastation" Pierce said, of the aftermath. "It doesn't even look like the same piece of property."
Pierce said Saturday afternoon she saw flames behind her house, and watched them spread quickly in the wind.
"It went so fast. The flames were shooting up in the air, and I didn't know what was going to happen" Pierce said.
She feared the flames would set her house ablaze and burn everything she owned.
"I'm trying to think, 'What would I take with me if I left'" she said.
Eleven fire departments, two helicopters and eight sheriff's deputies responded to the wildfire.
"They were parked right here in the driveway" Pierce said. "They had taken out their hoses and they had surrounded the house with it so that if it came close they'd spray it."
Luckily firefighters didn't have to resort to that, Pierce said, and she's grateful they came out in full force to protect her house.
"I was so thankful they were here, and they were so great" she said, adding "I just can't say enough good about them."
According to the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department, there were no reports of injuries or structures lost in the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
