Montana's Independent Living Centers want new homes built with state or federal grants to meet minimum access requirements for the disabled.

They suggest single family, duplexes, triplexes and townhouses meet certain standards. That would include 1. One zero-step entrance 2. Doors with 32 inches of clear passage space. 3. One bathroom on the main floor with maneuver space for a wheelchair.

Little Gia Mochan is a princess for Halloween. She's adorable. Gia has disabilties. She gets around pretty good. "She just wants to go trick or treating with her big sister," said her mother, Daria Mochan.

But stairs are a challenge. Heath Montgomery has a disability. Stairs are work. Getting into the family's first floor bathroom in their rental house is tough.

"Eventually, we may be forced to move, depending on Heath's mobility issue," said his mother Jenny Montgomery. If I was to own one of these homes and embark on a renovation project I would definitely consider accessibility."

It's easier when homeowners bring candy to the children. "I'm really grateful," said Montgomery.

When Darren Larson was a child, trick or treating was hard because he couldn't climb steps. He has cerebal palsy.

Larson is working with the state to make housing more accessible to the disabled. "Disability is a natural part of life," he said. "You never know when it may happen."

Larson said building an accessible house will cost about $600 extra. But he said retrofitting will cost thousands or tens of thousands.

Gia's mother thinks it's a good investment. "At some point," she said, "your family will be disabled.

"They (kids like Gia and Heath) can have a better life, said Larson. "What we are doing is for the next generation."
