Gallatin County Commissioners approved a resolution Tuesday morning that will require some Four Corners residents to pay an additional $675 per year in taxes to pay off a debt to a water utility company.About 180 users get their water and sewer service from Utility Solutions. The levy will run over the next four years to pay off more than $1 million that the Four Corners Water and Sewer District owes to the company.Susan Swimley, the attorney who represents the water district told Commissioners the tax was the fairest way to collect money for the debt.Swimley said the District considered other options, but decided residents would ultimately pay more with other options. Some residents of the area said they were frustrated that they would end up paying just as much money for their water usage as other companies in the area who use much more water.Swimley addressed those concerns by saying those residents ultimately have a benefit from receiving water and sewage service at all in that area.Commissioner Steve White said he would rather not have to raise taxes on anyone, but the Commissioners agreed the levy was the only way to pay off the debt in a timely manner. The Commissioners also said they were open to finding alternatives for payment in future meetings.
