Veterans Services Needs Increase in Bitterroot

Demand for Veterans services is ballooning in Ravalli County. The Bitterroot has one of the highest per capita veteran populations in Montana.

Services are growing to meet that demand. Veterans claims agent Rob Embree helps vets file claims to get into the V-A medical system.

He's had more than 12-hundred veteran visits since January.

Since January, Embree has obtained two-point three million dollars in claims in compensation for Ravalli vets.

57 percent of the claims were for Vietnam Veterans. 17 percent were for Afghan/Iraq Veterans. 10 percent were for World War II Veterans. 7 percent were for Korean War Veterans.

Embree says 18 American veterans commit suicide every day. Many of the vets who come here suffer from post traumatic stress syndrome.

The agent estimates 15 to 20 percent of the claims he works on are for vets with PTSD.

D. Golas is a licensed clinical social worker in Hamilton. She says there are new treatments that work.

Next door to the Valley Veterans Service Center is a V-A tele-health clinic. It opened this month.

Veterans can visit with a designated doctor over a special television setup.

A doctor might examine your bad knee over a TV set. They might suggest whether a trip to Missoula or Fort Harrison is necessary.
