Missoula, Mont. -- A new extreme sport program in Missoula helps vets return home after living with the daily stress of combat.
Many combat veterans know all too well what it’s like to be stressed and have adrenalin pumping through their bodies. It’s that feeling some can’t forget. That's where X-Sports 4 Vets comes into play.
Combat veterans find their bodies are hooked on a combat high and X-Sports 4 Vets redirects that energy in a healthy way. "Extreme sports such as rafting, river boarding, and kayaking help release that energy," explains X-Sports 4 Vets Director of marketing Jesse Roods.
Veterans not only get an extreme rush, but a sense of connection to society. "We're learning communication again, we're seeing that there are other people out there supporting us, that there are other veterans," says Roods.
One extreme sport in particular makes this program unique to Missoula. There are only a handful of guides in North America who offer white water river boarding, and luckily enough, one happens to live in Montana.
Vets like Frank Green of Missoula, who served in the National Guard, believe this program is the most effective way to bridge the gap between combat and home. "I think it's a great thing for everybody involved to do something exciting and you get a chance to be around other combat vets. Also people know what you've been through," explains Green
Those who haven't tried it say they're looking forward to the experience. "This is an excellent program, because it can help supplement that adrenalin rush. Also there’s brotherhood and camaraderie. Now you're a part of something where before you had something you lost and now you're a part of it again," explains veteran Jesse Raymond.
X-Sports 4 Vets partnered with a Montana River Guide and the Missoula Veteran Center to make it all possible. The program is funded through donations and local sponsors.
