The North Dakota National Guard says two of its soldiers were killed in Afghanistan, including a Montana native.
Forty-one-year-old Sgt. 1st Class Darren Linde, of Devils Lake, and 20-year-old Spc. Tyler Orgaard, of Bismarck, were killed Monday when a roadside bomb struck their vehicle. The Billings Gazette reports Linde graduated from high school in Sidney, Mont., and served in the Montana Army National Guard from 1998 through 2002 and again from 2005 through 2006.
Twenty-three-year-old Spc. Ian Placek, of Bismarck, was wounded. The Guard says he is in stable condition at a hospital in Germany.
The soldiers were with the 818th Engineer Company. The unit is headquartered in Williston with a detachment in Hazen. About 100 members of the unit deployed in April for a year of duty overseas.
