1909: Film director Elia Kazan is born Elias Kazantzoglou in Constantinople, Ottoman Empire (present-day Istanbul, Turkey). He earned Academy Awards for Best Director for "Gentleman's Agreement" and "On the Waterfront," and was also nominated for directing "A Streetcar Named Desire," "East of Eden" and "America, America." He also received Oscar nominations for the screenplay for "America, America" and for Best Picture as a producer on the film.
