1986: Gen. Augusto Pinochet, dictator and president of Chile, escapes an assassination attempt by the resistance group Frente Patriotico Manuel Rodriguez when he was returning from his weekend house. Five of Pinochet's security guards were killed in the attack and 11 more injured, although Pinochet, seen here in 1999, suffered only minor injuries.
