1974: Buford Pusser, the sheriff known for his virtual one-man war on moonshining, prostitution, gambling and other vices on the Mississippi-Tennessee state-line in the 1960s, dies at the age of 36 after his car struck an embankment at a high speed near Adamsville, Tenn. Pusser sometimes controversial efforts served as the inspiration for several books, songs and movies, as well as a TV series.
