A 49-year-old Helena man has been sentenced to five years in prison for a drunken driving hit-and-run that killed a bicyclist last September.

District Judge Jeffrey Sherlock sentenced Joel Brett Powers on Monday to 20 years with 15 suspended.

Powers earlier pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while under the influence in the death of 29-year-old Benjamin John Homan. Homan was riding his bike home on a rainy night when he was struck. He was wearing a helmet, but died of head injuries.

Under the plea agreement, prosecutors dismissed charges of aggravated DUI and failure to remain at the scene.

Court records say Powers' blood-alcohol level was 0.250, just over three times legal limit of 0.08 at which a person is considered intoxicated.
