HAMILTON, Mont. -

The Ravalli County Elections office and some schools are getting ready for school and special district elections. The elections will be held May 6.

Voters in two Bitterroot school districts will decide whether to approve mill levies to offset costs not met by state funding.

Elections workers are stuffing ballots to get in the mail Wednesday for all Florence voters and Hamilton's absentee voters. Hamilton is holding a poll election. Florence is a mail election.

"Our office will be mailing out approximately 7,500 for this election," said elections supervisor Regina Plettenberg, "so it's pretty big."

School clerks in Darby and Lone Rock are running their own elections.

Lone Rock Elementary is asking for a $100,000 general fund mill levy to sustain programs at their present level and to add an electronic card swipe security system.

Some of the services it would help pay for are maintaining small class size, arts, music and athletics, a middle school ski program and high-quality meals.

Hamilton's requested levy is $485,000.

Some of the services it would help support are performing arts, reducing student fee structures, and a program that prepares students for immediate employment, or university training in medical, technological and manufacturing industries.

"Due to our declining enrollment," said Hamilton superintendent Tom Korst, "a budget deficit, so that will help us get through the next two years."

"They are annual levies," said Ravalli County Superintendent of Schools Michael Williams, "and an operating levy has to be approved every year, so every spring they would have to go back to the drawing board."

Wiliams said if you are a Hamilton voter, and you own a $100,000 property, your tax increase would be about $25 a year, and the owner of a $200,000 property would pay an additional $50 a year.

In Lone Rock, he said, the cost for a $100,000 house is about $33 a year, and for a $200,000 property the cost would be about $66 a year.
