State wildlife officials have been unable to find the bear that attacked a Montana woman while she ran with her dogs last week on U.S. Forest Service land north of Columbia Falls.
Fish, Wildlife and Parks investigator Brian Somers the bear ran from the trees and attacked one of the dogs late Thursday morning. The woman yelled at the bear, then lay on her side. The woman said the bear bit her several times above the hip area before turning back to the dogs.
Somers says when the woman sat up the bear returned and bit her on the head several times before retreating into the woods. She believes it was a black bear. The woman was treated and released from the hospital.
The bear trap has been removed and the Forest Service planned to reopen the Cedar Flats trail area on Monday afternoon.
