The City of Missoula is taking one more step in protecting personal privacy.
After a public hearing at Monday's city council meeting, members voted to adopt an ordinance that generally prohibits employers from requesting passwords to personal e-mail or social networking accounts, like Facebook as a condition of employment.
The measures also states an employer can't ask to change your privacy settings, ask for a list of contacts r give any information that is password protected.
At tonight's meeting, one business advocate pointed out the wording of the measure could tie business owners' hands during certain, legitimate investigations, such as defamation or an employee releasing restricted company information through networking. Council members amended the measure to add exceptions to protect business owners rights in such cases.
This was a preliminary passage with a second reading to be scheduled at a meeting on or after August 5.
