An Augusta man has been arrested on suspicion of deliberate homicide in the death of a neighbor last fall - a shooting other area landowners warned was inevitable in 2009.
Joseph G. Campbell was arrested Monday and was being held on $1 million bail for the Oct. 18 shooting death of 53-year-old Timothy Newman. Prosecutors say Newman was shot in the back.
Court records say area landowners wrote to the Lewis and Clark County attorney's office in 2009 regarding Campbell's "aggressive and escalating behavior" in a land access dispute and asked prosecutors to do something before "the brandished gun is fired."
Newman was cited last year for cutting locks off gates Campbell had put up to block access to public lands beyond his property.
Court records say nine days before the shooting, Campbell told a deputy county attorney that he would "take care of" Newman.
