MISSOULA, Mont. -- Missoula residents only have one more day to protest special road and park districts.
Over the past few months, Missoula council members have been given an earful from their constituents.
Tuesday marks the end of the protest period for the districts.
"The majority of people I've talked to in my ward are against it," says Council Member Lyn Hellegaard.
The districts are designed to fund maintenance and improvements for Missoula's roads and parks. They would cost a home owner with a house valued at $225,000, $13 in the first year.
Council member Dave Strohmaier has been a strong advocate of the plan but admits not everyone in his ward is for it.
"It's been a mixed bag from what I have heard," says Strohmaier.
Hellegaard is in the minority on council, she says ward 4 thinks the districts are a bad idea.
"They are against it because it is not going to improve anything, it is just status quo, balancing the budget," says Hellegaard.
Strohmaier says, he wants to make sure that is not the case.
"I want to amend both the park and road districts, to make sure that the moneys that are garnered from those assessments go into actual new projects," says Strohmaier.
Hellegaard believes Missoulians can not afford another expense.
"We should put them off until the economy turns around, and we don't have people losing their jobs," says Hellegaard.
There is a chance the special districts could be thrown out. Fifty percent of the taxable district has to submit a protest form in order to kill the proposal. Strohmaier admits, that is not an easy number to meet.
"It is a significant hurdle to cross," says Strohmaier.
