Tax Hike Possible For Missoula County
POSTED: 10:34 pm MDT September 8, 2010UPDATED: 10:41 pm MDT September 8, 2010MISSOULA, Mont. -- Missoula county residents could see an increase in their property taxes next year.The proposed tax hike comes as county commissioners get ready to approve next year's budget.It would be the first time the county raised taxes in two years.The county plans a 1.5% increase from last year. Most departments across the county cut 2% of their budgets. That is on top of the 3.4% budget cuts in 2010.The budget will leave 8 currently vacant positions unfilled, including a sheriff's deputy and detention officer."We are being realistic about where the work is, and where the demand is for public service," says County Commissioner Jean Curtiss.The county tells the News Channel the tax hike will help maintain services, and pay for voter approved open space bonds. It breaks down to about $5 on a $200,000 home.The county will vote on the 2011 budget at their next meeting.
