MISSOULA, Mont. -

During a visit to Missoula's Watson's Children Center on Friday, Senator John Walsh announced the introduction of a bill to strengthen child endangerment laws.

Walsh says his bill creates a uniform child endangerment law across the county.

The bill makes it a federal crime to place children under 14 in the custody of individuals who are known child abusers and to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance, while a child is in the vehicle

Penalties include a fine and up to 10 years in prison.

"You know, we want to make sure that offenses that happen in Montana are offenses, you know if those offenses were to happen in Colorado or Wyoming for example, it's covered," said Senator John Walsh.

The senator says inconsistent laws from state to state make it difficult to prosecute offenders who cross state lines.
