Weather News

Strong storms possible Monday night

It's a hot day across Montana and expect it to get hotter on Monday. After a mild night with lows mainly in the 50s and low 60s temperatures will soar to the mid 80s to mid 90s depending on your area. If you work outside make sure to apply sunscreen, wear light colored clothing, and drink plenty of water.

An incoming system will bring additional moisture and produce high winds 15 to 30 thousand feet above our heads. Combined with the really warm temperatures expected tomorrow it's a good setup for some thunderstorms. Storms will develop during the afternoon in Oregon, Washington, and Idaho and track northeast into Montana after 7 p.m. and possibly as late as midnight. Storms that reach our area before sunset could become strong for sustained periods with gusty winds and moderately sized hail. There is a small chance an isolated severe storm could develop, although such as storm is much more likely in Idaho or Oregon than in Montana. Anyone planning evening activities outdoors from Salmon north to Missoula and Polson and west to the Idaho state line should be prepared to possibly have to take shelter from lightning.

Tuesday will be much cooler with highs only in the 70s. A few showers will hang around northwest Montana in the morning before moisture slides south in the afternoon. A few thunderstorms will develop in southwest Montana Tuesday afternoon, but should pose little more than a lightning threat.

There will only be a slight chance for showers for the rest of the week, but a shower or two will form up in the mountains each afternoon under moist winds from the northwest. Highs will return to the 80s Friday and remain there through next weekend under partly cloudy to mostly sunny skies.
