WHITEFISH, Mont. -

People in Whitefish saw a house fire on Saturday, but it was from a training exercise with the Whitefish Fire Department. A homeowner donated a house to the firefighters instead of demolishing it.

Firefighters set several small blazes throughout the building, using straw and wood palettes. Fire Chief Tom Kennelly says live burning exercises give his team a chance to hone their skills with a public audience.

?It just brings everybody together, all in one setting on one day, not individual shifts, to train together, learn some lessons, and it gets us out in the community,? said Kennelly.

Whitefish firefighters say they only get a chance to do live burns like Saturday?s about once a year.
