Missoula, MONT. -

Former Montana Grizzly linebacker Caleb McSurdy got one of the best phone calls of his life today as he discovered that he was picked in seventh round of the NFL Draft on Saturday by the Dallas Cowboys. He was the 222nd pick overall.

The 6-foot-1, 245-pound native of Boise, Idaho was the Big Sky Defensive player of the year last fall for the University of Montana. He was also named a first-team All-American by The Sports Network.

McSurdy recorded a team-high 131 tackles along with 9.5 stops for loss and four sacks.

The Grizzlies' defensive captain played in 55 career games at Montana and is ranked 10th in school history with 293 career tackles.

Meanwhile as the draft wrapped up, many other Grizzlies signed free agent deals with NFL squads: Jon Opperud with Seattle, Jabin Sambrano with Indianapolis, Charles Burton with San Diego and Brody McKnight to the New York Jets.

Former Montana State wide receiver Elvis Akpla signed with Philadelphia.
