MHP officers say a man was cited for careless driving after he drove off an embankment and into the Flathead River. Officers say it happened near the intersection of River Road and Highway 2 in Columbia Falls.
The man was allegedly looking at some paperwork and his cell phone in his vehicle, then looked up and saw he was heading straight for a tree. Officers say he sideswiped that tree and went right into the river.
Officers tell NBC Montana the man was able to escape from a broken window, and then swim to shore. MHP says he was treated for hyperthermia at North Valley Hospital and was then released.
