COLUMBIA FALLS, Mont. -

A group of Flathead residents arranged an oral cancer awareness and screening event Saturday afternoon to honor their late friend.

Lisa's Voice was thought up by Janis Johnson, who organized the event after her friend, Kalispell resident Lisa Peterson, lost her battle to the disease this past fall. The day featured speakers, door prizes, as well as free screenings for the disease by Flathead dentists and oral surgeons.

Johnson says she was thrilled with the outpouring of community support and encouraged everyone to get checked for oral cancer.

"Oral cancer is a silent killer and it only takes three minutes to have a screening," said Johnson, "So if it's found early it can save your life. Most times by not having a screening it's caught in the later stages and by then its too late."

All proceeds from Lisa's Voice go to the Oral Cancer Foundation.
