Kalispell Middle School is in a national competition to wih a fruit orchard planted by Dreyer's Fruit Bars.
School librarian Allison Mitchell is spearheading the campaign, and she says a field behind KMS would be the perfect location for the orchard that would contain apple, pear, and plum trees. The orchard would also be a special place for students and administrators, as the field would take on the name "Grace Orchard," honoring retiring principal Barry Grace.
Allison says the orchard would be utilized by science classes, the school cafeteria, and eventually local food banks. So far, KMS is in the lead with over 5,000 votes, but Mitchell says she'd love to see even higher numbers.
She says she's been telling her students to spread the world, "Get two more people to vote, get two more people to vote. [I created] a Facebook page that has been very successful in connecting other businesses with our voting forward. And competitiveness in general, let's beat those other schools and community organizations!"
Voting can be done daily, and the first round closes on May 30th. Check out how KMS is doing on Facebook and by casting your vote on the website.
