A Butte-Silver Bow official has filed a motion warning that a backlog of about 150 criminal cases in Butte city court could be dismissed if they aren't scheduled for trial. The Associated Press reports that Chief Deputy County Attorney Samm Cox says cases could be dismissed due to lack of a speedy trial. Criminal cases can be dismissed after six months if no trial date is set and it hasn't been postponed due to a defendant's motion. City Court Judge Dan Sweeney says his office has been assigning trial dates since April and will be caught up by July. Sweeney says the backlog started when Judge Steven Kambich resigned in December after being indicted on federal bribery charges. Kambich pleaded guilty and was placed on probation for five years.
