MISSOULA, Mont. -

Another new twist is emerging into allegations of sexual assault at the University of Montana.

We've been calling our sources and have been able to confirm that the Federal Government is now involved.

Our sources tell us the U.S. Justice Department will announce an investigation into the way the Missoula Police Department, County Attorney's Office and the University of Montana handled reports of sexual assault.

The news conference will be headed up by the department's civil rights division.

When contacted, Missoula County Attorney Fred Van Valkenburg confirmed he had received a letter from the Justice Department, but he said he wouldn't comment on its content.

This is separate from the civil rights complaint filed with the Federal Education Department two weeks ago that we reported on.

The news conference is scheduled for tomorrow in Missoula's Federal Courthouse.

NBC Montana will be there.
