BUTTE, Mont. -

Thieves hit Butte's Mountain View Cemetery sometime between Wednesday night and Thursday morning making off with some bronze vases.

According to Gaye Evans, the caretaker, 70 to 80 of the metal vases were stolen.

They were outside one of the cemetery's mausoleums.

Evans is a third generation caretaker and said the cemetery's never seen a theft like this.

She said it's hard not to take the crime personally.

"I wasn't shocked I was upset. Our fence gets hit I don't cry, but with the vases I had some tears, because even my grandparents vase was stolen, my mother's cousin's vase was stolen and it's just sad somebody has to stoop so low," Evans said.

Evans said she has received numerous phone calls and families stopping by the cemetery.

"I am upset in general that somebody would steal from the cemetery. I feel sorry for all of the family members that are going to come out here for Memorial Day and find their vases are gone everybody is just going to feel so sad that this happened," Evans said.

Butte-Silver Bow Sheriff John Walsh said the metal isn't worth much about two dollars a pound.
