KALISPELL, Mont -

Flathead Valley Community College wants the federal government to kick in $10 million dollars to build a walking and biking path to connect the college to Whitefish. The trail would run along the northbound side of Highway 93 from Kalispell Regional Medical Center to the Amtrak station in Whitefish.

The grant was submitted in mid-March and boosters tell us it has support from Whitefish, Kalispell, Flathead County, and KRMC. They say the walking and biking path would be a safer way for pedestrians and cyclists to get from one city to the other. The goal is to eventually connect to the other trail systems within the Flathead.

"[It] provides more access whether it's for the stores or the hospital or the medical community," says FVCC president Jane Karas, "It really provides something that we haven't had here in Flathead County for people that want the power of traveling under their own power whether its by foot or by bike."

FVCC says they should be hearing back from the US Department of Transportation sometime in the early summer.
