A climber who reached the summit of Mount Baker died on the way down when he skied off a cliff and fell about 800 feet.

The Whatcom County sheriff's office says 34-year-old Keith Hardy of Seattle was with a team that had climbed the mountain. They were on their way down when Hardy apparently didn't see the precipice. Others were able to stop in time.

The Bellingham Herald reports ( ) a Bellingham Search and Rescue that attempted to recover the body over the weekend but had to wait for weather conditions to improve to reach the location at the 8,200-foot level.

KOMO News reports ( ) Hardy was a family practice doctor in Bellevue, the team physician for the University of Washington lacrosse team and the Sammamish High School football team.
